METUCHEN – Listen, I’m an old liberal guy who once wrote stories about Watergate and the Son of Sam. But, geez, when you see pictures like this, you say to yourself, doggonnit, why didn’t I wake up from that bed I slept on without a box spring, and smell the roses every once in a while?

I could have left that stuffy Daily News newsroom on 42nd Street so I could be struck by the vision of a beautiful, rosy-cheeked starlight, like this one. And I’m sure there were plenty of them out there, and once in a while I did go outside (usually to the Carnegie Deli where I was more worried about spilling corned beef on my shirt than looking at cute babies).

So why is it that it took me 30 years, 30 years after the Son of Sam, 35 years after writing “The Good Guys Finally Won,” to realize that I could witness beauty this elegant, this composed, this statuesque, this joyful?

I ask you.
