METUCHEN – Tommy
Davis displayed gritty
determination Saturday as he set down the despondent but easygoing AAs
1-2-3 in
the game’s second inning.
No one is
quite sure who won the game because the
scoreboard hasn’t been turned on since game three.
However, Davis
proved to be a perfect follow-up to
Nicky Loffredo, who also hurled a perfect 1-2-3 first inning.
Davis
threw the ball right down the middle, inspired by Jim
“Catfish” Hunter’s belief
that walks make more runs than solo home runs. Or something like that.
The only
distraction came from the audience,
when Davis’ 1-year-old sister, Anna Shae Davis, made repeated
demands for
pretzels.
Davis’s
dad also made a nuisance of himself by nearly hitting people in the
opposing
dugout with that too-long telephoto lens that looks like an
aardvark’s nose.
Davis’s
dad, however, was soon out of his young
protégé’s hair when he was asked to
spin Jonathan Davis and Jay Harry on the tire swing.
