Livingston crime is on the rise

The Livingston Campus Council met recently to discuss the Livingston campus’s 300 percent burglary increase since last year.

Lt. Lenny Safko of the Rutgers Police Department described the robberies as instances where students’ had laptops, cell phones, money and iPods stolen from their dorm rooms in the Quads on Livingston campus.

Safko would not disclose how many crimes took place, but he did say three allegedly occurred while the victims were asleep.

“We have no leads as of this time,” Safko told a seemingly calm and unaffected group of council members. “We have reason to believe most of the burglaries occurred as a result of students leaving their doors unlocked.”

Recent economical struggles have burglary rates higher than ever. Although the RUPD is actively investigating the recent crimes, the police have made no improvements or modifications to their campus security systems.

“Most likely there are one or two people behind the burglaries,” Safko said. “Hopefully it will only take one or two arrests to see robberies in the Quads stop.”
