Rutgers University students are frustrated that the Western Monmouth Campus does not have a cafeteria or a similar food resource.

Students say that Rutgers university’s other campuses all have on-site cafeterias and other places that provide coffee, snacks, and sandwiches

Rutgers University student Samantha Rocco, 23, recalled an incident when she had no time before class to stop for food, and was so hungry during her three hour class she felt sick by the time she had to drive home.

Sally Hoffman, 22, Rutgers University student points out that the Rutgers students who commute to the Western Monmouth campus pay the same tuition and campus fees as any other Rutgers’ student, but do not receive the same services for their money.

Hoffman, has attended classes at Rutgers New Brunswick, Newark and Western Monmouth campuses and noticed her “campus fee” was the same at all three locations, but the quality of services was very different at each location.
“Its hard adjusting to a bustling campus in New Brunswick to a place that does not even have a place to sit down and have a coffee,” Hoffman states.

The Western Monmouth Campus is surrounded by countless fast food places and has several on-site vending machines, but many students say they long for a cafeteria or dining area

“What food on campus? The McDonalds next door? That does not count. I would really like it if I could get a coffee without having to drive,” Rutgers University student, Victoria Johnson, 24, said.

University student, Michael Doherty, 22, said he’s an adult and very capable of making sure he has enough to eat over along day. But it would be nice, he said, to have a place to go relax and do school work on my laptop between classes.”

The students say that commuters typically have obligations outside of school, and it would be a great convenience to the students and even the faculty at the Western Monmouth Campus to have a place to grab a coffee or fresh food on site.

Western Monmouth students are not asking Rutgers for a full service restaurant, but simply some food options available on site.

Another student, Jimmy Murison, 23 said he had three classes in the same day and he did not have enough time in between class to leave campus, and had to eat Doritos and Pepsi all day because there was no other food options available.

“We aren’t looking for a dining hall – maybe just a coffee maker,” he said.
