RU STUDENTS LIKE THE COLD
Some students say the cold weather is not so bad.

Rutgers University senior Katrina Heinig walked through her house door all bundled up with a Starbucks cup in hand.

“They said on the radio today that it is textbook fall weather.”

When asked what her thoughts on the season were, she grinned.

“Fall is probably my favorite season. It always reminds me of field hockey. The smell of the leaves on the ground and the smell of dirt reminds of practicing," she said. "I loved field hockey in high school, so fall always brings back good memories of it.”

Many students like Katrina Heinig associate fall and winter with good memories. With the season changing and the warm weather gone, it should be a difficult transition. But many Rutgers students welcome the colder weather and what it has to offer.

“The part of fall that is annoying are the leaves. They get all over your car and are everywhere. Honestly though, when I think about fall, I always think of the family parties I go to. No other season reminds me of family like fall does.” says Rutgers senior Rachel Elfenbein.

Memories from fall do not just stop at family. Many students say that fall also represents school to them.

“Fall reminds me of back-to-school shopping and getting back to Rutgers,” said Cara Gilbert, a Rutgers Junior. “I hate all the school work but I love being at school with my new clothes and being with my friends again.”

“Fall will always remind me of Rutgers football games. Yeah, being at school means work but I love going to the tailgates and games.” says Rutgers junior Colleen Magrann. “I actually like getting bundled up to go to the games and standing in the cold. I always just associate fall with football and eating food from the concession stand.”

Thanksgiving was another common memory of fall for students. “When fall comes, all I can think about is getting together with my family at Thanksgiving. We always go to my aunt’s house and we always play football. When I think of fall I have this clear picture in my head of my aunt's backyard with leaves all over it,” says freshman Jennifer Fedak.

Students agreed that the most difficult part about fall is the temperature change. “When fall comes I know I will be back at school with my friends, but it is so hard to see the warm weather go.” says sophomore Jackie Slotkin.

“With the weather getting colder I will say it is harder to go to class. The time change doesn’t help either. When it is dark by five I have the hardest time going to my night class.” says junior Jordan Levy.

Even with the weather changing and the earlier sunsets, students manage to tolerate fall by reminding themselves of what it brings.

“I guess with the weather change and the time change you would think being a student in the fall would suck. I have so many good memories, though, that I really don’t mind the fall.” says junior Michelle Ciciyasvill.
