Ex-smoker Katherine Sastre, 24, completed her first triathlon last month.

She quit smoking five months before the race to prepare for training.

Sastre cut down smoking socially and eventually became accustomed to not smoking.

“I wouldn’t have been able to do the race if I hadn’t quit,” Sastre said.

“When I started training, it was awful and my breathing was all off,” she said. “I really didn’t think I would be ready in time.”

On the day of the race, Sastre felt “confident” and finished without any complications. She just signed up for her next triathlon, Mooseman, in June 2010.
