Despite having tight finances, Rutgers University student Edward McGarrigle spends at least $40 a week at the local New Brunswick AMC Theater to watch the latest Hollywood releases.

A senior studying journalism along with cinema studies, McGarrigle's goal is to become a movie or music critic.

He hopes to take over Peter Travers’ day job, completing reviews for “Rolling Stones.”

Thus, his reason for this expensive habit is simple and justifiable, he said: It’s a necessary investment for his future.

“When watching movies I usually pay attention to cinematography and camera work but it’s something you would have to see all work together,” said McGarrigle.

Son of an administrative assistant at a day care center and a father who owns his own business in household waste management, McGarrigle’s dreams of becoming a critic are based solely on his own life’s passion.

“I’ve always had such a passion for music and movies, and just always had a very strong opinion about them. I was able to read deeper into movies and music and that’s where this dream of being a critic was birthed from,” says McGarrigle.

He does not cite any particular movies as having a major influence on his desire to be a critic. All of them have inspired him, he said.

McGarrigle does fear, that with the approaching of graduation in May 2011, he will not be able to find a job. “Let’s be honest – the job market for movie critics is not exactly booming at the moment,” he said.

But McGarrigle said he is currently unsure of what he would do with his life if he did not find a job as a critic. His parents warned him of this, even though they are very supportive of his goals.

Growing up, he said, his dad always said: “Make your main goal to make your life better than mine.”
