The Manhattan culture affected Rutgers student Olivia Slutsky’s life tremendously, ultimately inspiring two career goals: music and fashion journalism.

“The New York music scene is incredible,” said Slutsky, who considers her favorite genre to be Indie/Alternative Rock.

Slutsky enjoys New York’s music scene for it’s undiscovered talent. “You just have to look for it,” Slutsky said.

That’s just what Slutsky does. “My best friend Becky and I used to hop on the L train and go to free concerts in Williamsburg, where there are a lot of hidden treasures,” said Slutsky.

Slutsky spends a lot of her free time searching the web for up and coming artists. She’s discovered artists like Bon Iver and Trevor Hall in these searches and feels especially inspired by their music, she said.

“It’s important to me to connect with music lyrically and musically,” said Slutsky, “Every time I listen to them I am riveted by their lyrics and when it comes to Bon Iver also his experimental sounds.”

Slutsky appreciates the kind of music that isn’t necessarily considered mainstream. She likes finding artists with raw talent and a passion for their music.

“People like Miley Cyrus infuriate me because she has no talent,” Slutsky said, “She is famous because her dad was a one hit wonder, but she doesn't deserve it.”

Slutsky said she feels that she was able to explore her favorite genres because she lived in New York City, where her love for music was able to develop.

“Because of my passion for music I have thought about writing album reviews or putting music to movie scenes,” she said.

Manhattan’s music scene was not the only thing that inspired Slutsky’s future career ideas. “New York Fashion. Whenever I think about it, my heart melts.” Slutsky said.

Growing up in New York City was the ultimate inspiration for Slutsky’s love for fashion. “I am a shopaholic,” she said, “That’s for sure.”

Not being an avid reader of fashion magazines, the majority of inspiration for Slutsky’s style comes from the city itself.

“I'm inspired when I am in Brooklyn or the Village, by the unique styles around me,” Slutsky said, “For me, fashion is when I see something that I love and I can put any outfit together using it.”

In addition to having her fashion eye nurtured by Manhattan, Slutsky says that fashion actually runs in her family. “My grandma was a lingerie designer, she started Victoria Secrets first day wear lines and they then offered her to buy a part of the company,” Slutsky said, “Being the independent woman that she was, she declined. She cursed herself every day for that later in life.”

Still, she credits New York for a lot of what has influenced her style today. “That’s another thing I love about New York, it is filled with characters who dress the way they want and don't care what anyone else thinks. It's uplifting,” Slutsky said.

Slutsky has been having trouble with the particular issue of her own clothing since moving to New Jersey.

“When I dress how I would in Manhattan, my friends say, ‘That’s too much for Rutgers, people here cannot handle that,’” she said.

However, this doesn’t stop Slutsky from setting her goals high. “Fashion week in Bryant Park is absolutely amazing,” she said, “I would love to report on that one day.”
