Ciarra Zatorski, co-valedictorian of her high school class and a first-year commuter at Rutgers University, says a broadcasting class she took in high school inspired her to get into broadcasting and journalism on the college level.

Zatorski is currently taking a course called News Reporting and Writing to learn more about writing and journalism before applying to the School of Journalism.

She is also taking Communications 101, a prerequisite for many other communications classes she may want to take in the future, she said.

“I think it is important to sort of explore all of my options and learn a little more about the different fields of media in order to figure out what it is exactly that I want to pursue” said Zatorski.

Zatorski currently plans on applying to either the School of Journalism or Communications at Rutgers to begin her goal of working in the media industry.

She is also considering a minor in marketing for a possible magazine job. Zatorski says that working for a top magazine in any capacity would be interesting and something she would love to do whether it’s fashion, entertainment, or anything else.

“I have always had an interest in magazines and the creative aspect of them,” said Zatorski.

In a broadcasting class called “Kudos” taken in Zatorski’s second, third, and fourth years of high school, she got hands-on experience in the production of the morning show that played on TVs in every classroom, including commercials, music videos, etc.

“I really decided that I wanted to get involved in the media industry because I was able to get somewhat of a sense of what it was like,” said Zatorski.

By her junior and senior years, Zatorski said, she was involved in all aspects of the morning show including acting as a news anchor and recorder, and handling the technical aspects behind the scenes.

“Because this class involved so much creativity, it inspired me to want to pursue some aspect of the media industry,” said Zatorski.

Zatorski found herself at her second choice, Rutgers, after being denied from pursuing her interest in journalism and broadcasting at NYU. Her brother and sister both attend Rutgers.

Her sister is an aspiring chemist in grad school and her brother is a sophomore studying chemical engineering. “ I think I put more pressure on myself to live up to my siblings than my parents do.

They support anything I want to do.” As she reflects on where she is now, Zatorski admits that NYU might have been too difficult and she’s happy to be a Scarlet Knight.
